The event was unveiled at a press conference held at the Golden Tulip Hotel on April 3, 2026, under the theme “Exposing Bayelsa to the World Through Sports Development,” highlighting the state’s ambition to expand its presence on the global sporting stage.
Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, described the race as a landmark initiative that will elevate Bayelsa’s reputation. He expressed confidence in the state’s preparedness and encouraged widespread participation.
The Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, revealed that more than 1,000 athletes have already signed up. She commended Governor Douye Diri and partners for their support, noting that necessary logistics, including medical and technical teams, are fully in place.
Participants will compete in three categories—Elite, Indigenous, and Group—with attractive prize rewards.
In the Indigenous category, the top Bayelsa runner will take home ₦1 million. Additionally, the Bayelsa State Ministry of Sports Development has announced a bonus of ₦500,000 each for the first male and female Bayelsan runners, further boosting local participation.
International athletes from Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya are expected to add excitement and competitiveness to the race.
In addition, the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Ebiyai, urged youths to take advantage of the opportunity while assuring visitors of a safe and welcoming environment.
With advanced tracking systems, a guided race route, and refreshment points along the course, organizers say the event is designed to meet international standards.
