NSF: BAYELSA SWAN CONGRATULATES STATE ATHELTES, OFFICIALS
****Calls For State's Representative To Be Part Of Medal Collation
****Lauds Governor Diri's commitment To Sports Development
The Bayelsa chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN), has given thumbs up to the State contingent at the just concluded 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun state, tagged, "The Gateway Games 2024".
Team Bayelsa proved once again to be one of the best following their impressive performance at the festival, which saw them maintain the lead in the first few days before bowing to the eventual winners, Delta state.
The state contingent garnered a total of 228 medals, comprising 92 gold, 65 silver, and 71 bronze medals.
A statement by the Chairman, Mrs. Timinepre Ohia and Secretary, Mr. Patrick Ndubuisi, commends the athletes and coaches for their doggedness and fighting spirit throughout the festival.
This is as it also praised the state Governor, Senator Douye Diri for prioritizing sports development, which has maintain a steady lead in almost all sporting events within and outside the country, indeed, making Bayelsa a household name, and a major contender in all competitions.
Bayelsa SWAN further notes that his presence at the closing ceremony of the festiival, where he made his way to the stand of the Bayelsa contingent signifies his undiluted love for his people, while commending the Governor for the twenty million naira promise to the team for making the state proud.
It also gave thumbs up to the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo for his meticulous supervision of the Sports subsector and the Commissioner for Sports, Champion Daniel Igali as well as the Director of Sports, Sir Braveman Wodi for driving the vision to success.
The body also commends the National Sports Commission led by its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Chief Bukola Olapade, as well as the Ogun state government for organizing one of the best National Sports Festivals in history, as the 2024 Gateway Games will now become a yardstick to measure future events.
However, Bayelsa SWAN expresses worry over the last-minute games after the closing ceremony, as it has drawn wide questions from all stakeholders.
The statement further calls on the National Sports Commission, to adopt the model of the Niger Delta Sports Festival where the total number of sports and total number of athletes was made known to all participating states, which helped in the monitoring and checkmating of all events by the state.
It says this will ensure credibility and accountability, and further disabuse and erase any form of suspicion and conspiracy from the organizers and the host state.
Bayelsa SWAN concludes the statement by calling on the National Sports Commission to ensure that officials of every states' sports council are part of the local organizing committee team that is responsible for medal collation, so as to avoid suspicion.
