Afugiri Girls Model Secondary School Emerges Champion of 3rd Ohuhu Spelling Bee Competition Sponsored by Hon. Akaliro


The 3rd Edition of the Ohuhu Spelling Bee, a flagship educational event sponsored by the Member Representing Umuahia North (Ohuhu) State Constituency, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, was held successfully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, bringing together young minds from across Ohuhu in a vibrant celebration of literacy and academic excellence.
The event, organized under the theme “Raising Readers, Building Leaders”, featured eight secondary schools within Ohuhu, namely:

Afugiri Girls Model Secondary School

Okaiuga Nkwoegwu Secondary School

Ofeme Technical School

Oriemeanyi Secondary School

D Great Ambassador Nelcinn

Community Secondary School, Isingwu

Comprehensive Secondary School, Umuda-Isingwu

Ohiya Community Secondary School
After a fiercely contested series of rounds, Afugiri Girls Model Secondary School emerged the overall winner, with D Great Ambassador Schools clinching the 1st Runner-up position, and Okaiuga Nkwoegwu Secondary School—the reigning champions from the previous edition—finishing as 2nd Runner-up.
The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including traditional rulers and stakeholders in the education sector, who commended the initiative and expressed optimism for its continued growth.
Tochukwu Eluwa, the Convener and Team Lead of the Read to Lead Initiative, expressed deep satisfaction with the outcome of the event:
> “It’s truly fulfilling to see how this project is shaping the future of our young people in Ohuhu. The enthusiasm, brilliance, and confidence shown by these students are proof that with the right support, our communities can raise global leaders. We are grateful to all partners, especially our sponsor Hon. Anderson Akaliro, for believing in this vision” he stated.

Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, the event sponsor and a champion of youth development, applauded the students who participated and their teachers.
> “This is more than a spelling competition—it’s an investment in the minds of our future. I am proud of all the students who participated and especially thrilled to see the bar raised higher each year. I assure you that we will not stop here. I will continue to support and expand initiatives that promote education and youth excellence, he added.
HRH Eze Charles Ngwuli, Chairman of the Ohuhu Council of Traditional Rulers, also commended the organizers
> “This is a noble effort. Education remains the bedrock of any developed society, and I commend the Read to Lead Initiative and the Sponsor for their commitment to our children’s future.”

HRH Eze Abel Ogbonna, Traditional Ruler of Ogwara na Nkaru Awa, on his part commeded the initiative. 
 “What we witnessed today is a pointer to the fact that our youth have the potential to lead the world in intellectual capacity. I urge other communities to emulate this effort" he admonished.

High Sunny Nlewdim, Eze Designate of Umuyota Autonomous Community, in his mark commended the organizer and the Sponsor, and called for continuity of the event 
> “This event is both inspiring and timely. I salute the organizers and the sponsor for helping to place Ohuhu students on a higher pedestal” he noted.

Mr. Ejikeme Ikwunze, former Director of Sports, Abia State who was present at the event, shared his enthusiasm and commended the organizers.
> “Seeing the energy and focus these students brought to the stage reminds me of the importance of holistic development. This spelling bee adds balance to their learning process and prepares them for the challenges of the world ” he adduced.
The Executive Director, TRAJDAN, Kelechi Imo who delivered a lecturer on building leadership and imbibing good characters early was present.

The Youth President of Umuawa Alaocha, Hon. Adindu Chizaram also graced the event 

As the curtains fell on the 3rd edition, excitement and anticipation already began to build for the next. Organizers have promised a bigger, more inclusive competition in 2026, with plans to introduce mentorship components, mathematics, more Igbo words  expand participation.
