Vera powers Bayelsa Queens to NWFL title
Bayelsa Queens FC were crowned NWFL Premiership champions for the sixth time in the club’s 25-year history after a comfortable 4-1 victory over Naija Ratels at the pitch 4 of the Remo Stars Stadium on Saturday in Ikenne.
Vera Samuel’s hat-trick was enough to seal the win, as the Prosperity Girls pulled off a major upset against a Ratels side that created some chances in the game.
Whyte Ogbonda’s team, led by Alaba Olabiyi in attack and Dooshima Tarnum and Aderemi Mary orchestrating from midfield, had the lion’s share of the ball and made it count.
It was Vera Samuel that opened the flood-gate of goals in the 29th minute with a beautiful header from a cross by Mega Cynthia, but Naija Ratels equalized in the 44 minutes of play to end the first half 1-1.
The Prosperity Girls began the second half with much intensity and Mega Cynthia scored the second goal in 46 minutes. Alaba Olabiyi was a major culprit as she missed a golden opportunity to make it three coming one on one with Ratels goalkeeper and Vera Samuel got her second on the hour mark to put the game beyond the reach of Naija Ratels and eight minutes later Vera Samuel got her third goal for Bayelsa Queens to wrapped up the game.
Technical Adviser Bayelsa Queens, Whyte Ogbonda said patience paid off against Naija Ratels in the NWFL Premiership final game on Saturday as he celebrated the club’s sixth trophy.
“The spirit and togetherness on the pitch was amazing. It was all about being patient,” Whyte said.
“I would like to thank the Government of Bayelsa State for giving the team the enabling environment to thrive, and for sure we are going to beef up the team as we have qualified for the CAF WAFU-B,” Coach Whyte Ogbonda added.
