NPFL25: Classy Bayelsa United Tame Akwa United

A goal in each half from Sadiq Auwal and substitute Ibrahim Yahaya gave a resurgent Bayelsa United 2-1 victory over Akwa United in a matchday seventeen fixture of the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL decided at Samson Siasia stadium, Yenagoa.

Chijioke Alaekwe put the "Promise Keepers" ahead on 23 minute from Paschal Onunze's low cross to beat Bayelsa United goalkeeper, Godgift Elkanah who has been phenomenal this season for the Prosperity Boys.

Forward Sadiq Auwal restored parity for the host on 41 minute when Hassan Oladimeji ran past Akwa United players to find Simon Daniel at the edge of the danger zone who intelligently find Sadiq with a sublime finish having missed a close range effort in the opening minutes of the game.

Apparently not satisfied with the scoreline, experienced technical adviser of Bayelsa United introduced midfielder Ibrahim Yahaya for Rabiu Abdullahi and Fuluwa Akpokabowei who came in for Emo James on 63 minutes.

Fuluwa Akpokabowei on 79 minute picked Simon Daniel's ball against Akwa United goaltender but fired blank, midfielder Ibrahim however capitalized on Akpokabowei's rebounded effort as Yahaya headed home the ball to give the Prosperity Boys the lead.

The victory extended Bayelsa United to four games unbeaten since the defeat against Shooting Stars on the 25th of November, 2024 at the Lekan Salami Stadium and next face Remo Stars this weekend.

Technical Adviser of Bayelsa United, Ladan Bosso in a post match interview, noted that the victory was not a true reflection of the scoreline, that his side would have been three goals up in the first half, stating that the attention of the team has moved to Remo Stars this weekend at Ikenne.

Akwa United interim coach, Umar Abdullahi, said the performance of the team was the best they have had in recent times, pointing out that their aim was to secure maximum three points in Yenagoa.
