"When we left Bayelsa we did not come here for medals, we came to gauge where we are against the world, and we have done that as far as Mathew goes we have done that yesterday and it's a good start."

"We know were he is now and it's a good start and as you know we are about to open our hall and when the proper immense training starts we can come out and say okay we are coming for medals maybe from the next one but right here our mission is to come and gauge and know where we are against the world not even Africa."

The Chairman Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association was also impressed with John Mathew's performance despite a late call up to the team due to an operation on the team captain, Samuel Boboye, adding that John Mathew will definitely become a star in the future."

"Mathew was not prepared, we actually pulled him out from school so he had a very short time to prepare."

"With this start and compared to the performance he gave yesterday you would know that he's a very promising player and he's going to do well in the future".
