Epoch Making Bayelsa State Sports Festival Begins with 8 LGAs Taking Part in Opening Ceremony

The first edition of the Bayelsa State Sports Festival got underway with an opening ceremony held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa on Sunday.
Declaring the event tagged ‘Prosperity Unity Games’ open, Governor Douye Diri said the present administration would continue to accord priority to Sports to enable the people have healthy lives and create avenues for the youth to actualize their potential.
The opening ceremony featured a colourful march past by athletes and officials from the 8 Local Government Areas of the State.
Governor Douye Diri explained that the idea behind conceiving the Bayelsa State Sports Festival was to foster unity among the people and positively channel the energy of the youth for productive ventures.
Governor Diri expressed the hope that the competition would produce a new generation of sportsmen and women that would become national and global stars, urging the participants to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship and fairplay.
In a remark, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development, Daniel Igali thanked the Governor Diri led Administration for the smooth take off of the historic State Sports Festival, giving an assurance that the event would provide an avenue to discover raw talents.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Access Corporation, Dr. Herbert Wigwe who was represented by the Relationship Manager of Access Bank, Mr. Miebi Flint Kakiri said the financial institution decided to sponsor the games to develop sporting talent in the State.
Highpoint of the opening ceremony was cultural display and entertainment by artistes including Ijaw music crooner Jah Wonder.
In the opening football match, Brass and Ogbia settled for a two all draw at the mainbowl of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex.
Action begins in many of the 14 sporting events at the State Sports Festival on Monday just as weightlifting and few other sports started on Sunday with some athletes already winning medals.
