Director Of Sports Urges Nigerian Students To Combine Sports With Education

Bayelsa State Director of Sports Bayelsa State Sports Council Sir Braveman Wodi has advised students in the country to combine sports with education to boost their careers.

Sir Wodi gave the advice at the 2022 International University Sports Day at the Samson Siasia Stadium Yenagoa.

The Director said sports has gone beyond recreation but money spinning were people earn a leaving from it, calling on students to imbibe the culture of sports as a veritable tool in eradicating social vices in society.

While applauding the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO for initiating the day, he noted the day has further created an awareness on the importance of sports to human.

He explained that the Ministry and Sports Youths  Development and the Sports Council would continue to promote sports and partner the various institutions,stating that the university is a fertile ground to discover talents.

The Director pointed out that the World University Sports Day has strengthened the relationship between the sports council and the various institutions, stressing that in the past the council has always rendered assistance to the university by providing them facilities to train.

Vice chancellor, Niger Delta University Professor Samuel Edoumiekumo represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration Prof Allen Agih stated that he was impressed with the turn out of students from Ekeki to the Samson Siasia Stadium, maintaining that  the exercise would be a continuous one. 

Professor Agih called on the government to encourage other areas of human development by investing in sports, describing sports as a global tool to make money apart from leaving healthy.

Also, Executive Secretary Bayelsa State Higher Education Student Loan Board, Dr Michael Amaegberi remarked that University Sports is doing well and that there was need for the private sector and the government to support sports.

Two students from the Niger Delta University Angel Gesiere- Dio and Iwhi Ufuoma noted that sports has exposed them to the World having participated in the NUGA games.

Highpoints of the day include  a football match between the Bayelsa State Medical University and Africa University Toru-Orua,Kung Fu exhibition display and 100 metres relays race.

In attendance were Students from the Bayelsa State University, BMU, Africa University, Toru-Orua, Niger Delta University NDU and Federal University Otuoke.
