Umuawa Boycotts Ohuhu Welfare Union Election, Threatens Lawsuit Over Reinstated Candidate

The people of Umuawa (Alaocha na Alaike) have announced a total boycott of the purported Ohuhu Welfare Union (OWU) election scheduled for Saturday, 16th May, 2026, warning that they will challenge in court any attempt to reinstate a candidate they described as “duly disqualified.” This was part of the resolutions reached during a meeting of Umuawa Zone held on Thursday, 14th May, 2026, where leaders and stakeholders from the six villages of Umuawa condemned what they termed violations of the Ohuhu Welfare Union Constitution ahead of the election. In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the community also called for the postponement of the election for at least three weeks to mourn the late Chairman of the OWU Caretaker Committee, Dr. Emeka Okengwu, who died on 9th May, 2026 while serving the clan. H.E. Mayor Lucky Igbokwe (Don Lulu), the chairman of Don Media Group, which owns Ikoro 93.3 FM and Don 103.7 FM, has been conferred with the Awa Man of the Year Award by the youth of his community, Umuawa-Alaocha. During the award presentation, in his Umuawa-Alaocha country home, yesterday, Monday, 8th July, 2025,  the Youth President of the community, Hon. Adindu Chizaram, stated that Mayor Igbokwe was chosen for this honour due to his significant investments in the community. These investments have greatly empowered the youth through job creation and have contributed to the overall development of Umuawa-Alaocha. Kingdom Stars Football Academy emerged champions of the One-Day Easter Kids Cup after a thrilling 3–2 penalty shootout victory over Stardom Life Football Academy, following a 2–2 draw in regulation time. The exciting grassroots tournament, which kicked off at 8:00 a.m., was held at Hamilton Sports Garden in Ekeki, Yenagoa. The competition brought together talented young footballers between the ages of 5 and 10 from various academies across Bayelsa State.
