Stakeholders Thank Bayelsa State Government For Hosting 2nd Governor Diri Scrabble Championship

Participants at the just concluded Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship have thanked the Bayelsa state Government for organizing the 2nd edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship.

The players who spoke at the end of the three day event gave thumbs up to the state government for giving them the opportunity to play Scrabble at the highest level while describing it as the best in the country.

Masters winner, Nsikak Etim gave kudos to the state government for the opportunity and for developing Scrabble in Bayelsa state. 

He added that Scrabble helps in the mental development of the youths.

For the intermediate category winner, Akoofure Orughele who was impressed with the turn out of players for the championship, praised the state government for organizing the event describing it as the best in the country.

While the winner of the open category, Mr Burogha Douglas appreciated the organizers, especially the governor for making it possible for them to play the championship at the highest level.

He also added that Scrabble was fast developing in the state as youths are now playing the game.

Also, the chairman Bayelsa State Scrabble Association Mr. Daniel Alabrah was full of gratitude to Governor Diri  for the support and making it possible to host the championship while adding that the governor Diri Scrabble competition had become the biggest scrabble tournament in Nigeria.

He pointed out that the championship has afforded Bayelsa State an opportunity to produce young scrabble players for the country.

Alabrah explained that the introduction of the students category generated interest that reflected in the high number of participants in the showpiece.

About 272 scrabble players across the country participated in five categories:  Masters, Intermediate, Open, Schools and Veterans in the two day event which took place at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Yenagoa with winners going home with trophies and total cash prize.

Nsikak Etim from Akwa Ibom state won the star prize of N500,000 and a trophy in the competition as he emerged the winner in the masters category.

Akoofure Orughele from Delta State won the intermediate category while Jacob Jonah was the winner of the veterans' category, just as Burogha Douglas from Bayelsa State was the opens event champions.

There was also a new champion in the student event as another champion from Federal Government College Odi, Adeleke John dethroned Ikoko David who won the category last year.

A total of N5 Million prize money were won at the two day Governor Douye Diri Scrabble Championship.
