Gov Diri to Close Maiden Bayelsa State Sports Festival

  By--- Alambo Datonye Fred  After nearly a week of action among the eight local government areas, the inaugural Bayelsa State Sports Festival will come to a fitting climax on Friday. Governor Douye Diri is expected to lead a cast of dignitaries to declare the showpiece tagged ‘Access Bank Prosperity Unity Games’ close at the ceremony billed for the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa from 4pm.  According to the order of programme released by the organizers, athletes are expected to arrive at the venue from 1pm while top government officials are expected to be seated from 2pm. Ijaw music crooner, Jah Wonder is among entertainers booked to thrill spectators at the event alongside ball juggler, Tonye Solomon, popularly known as ‘Deeboi’. Igali Pleased With Bayelsa State Athletes Performance, as Brass LGA Leads Medal Table

By Hananeel Jackson   Bayelsa State  commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Dr Daniel Igali says he is impressed  with the performance of athletes at the ongoing Bayelsa State Sports Festival tagged Access Bank Prosperity Unity. Igali in an interview said the athletes from the various local government areas in the state have shown that team Bayelsa State's outstanding outing in the last sports festival in Asaba Delta State was not fluke. He noted that he was happy to see young athletes within the age range 12 to 17 years participate  in the showpiece that is prime and proper for coaches to groom for the future, stating that he is not concerned about the winning of medals but the commendable ages of the athletes. Brass, Ekeremor And Sagbama Strike Gold In Day Two Of Bayelsa State Sport Festival

Francis Joseph Brass, Ekeremor And Sagbama Local Government Areas in day two of the Bayelsa State Sport Festival tagged Access Bank Prosperity Unity Games clinched gold medals in their respective events. Brass Local Government Area where the biggest winners as they won two gold, one silver in canoeing in the ongoing event. The canoeing event which kicked off at the Ox-bow lake pavilion witnessed fine performances from athletes as Brass LGA dominated proceedings from 1000 metres mixed doubles, 500 meters men's doubles and 500 metres women's. Brass LGA displayed their aquatic prowess clinching gold in the 1000 metres mixed doubles with a time of 2:05:31 split, Yenagoa LGA came second with 2:06:76 split as  Kolokuma/Opokuma managed to settle for 3rd place finish. By Hananeel Jackson Brass Local Government Area on Tuesday sent a clear statement of intent after winning two gold, one silver in canoeing on day two of the ongoing Bayelsa State Sports Festival tagged Access Bank Prosperity Unity Games. The canoeing event which kicked off at the Ox-bow lake pavilion witnessed five performances from athletes with Brass LGA dominating proceedings from 1000 metres mixed doubles, 500 meters men's doubles and 500 metres women's. Declaring the showpiece open Governor Diri, urged athletes to follow the symbol of unity that the State Sports Festival represents by abiding by the rules that governs the fiesta, stating that the festival is another landmark achievement of his administration in the area of sports development. Declaring the event tagged ‘Prosperity Unity Games’ open, Governor Douye Diri said the present administration would continue to accord priority to Sports to enable the people have healthy lives and create avenues for the youth to actualize their potential. The opening ceremony featured a colourful march past by athletes and officials from the 8 Local Government Areas of the State.    Governor Douye Diri explained that the idea behind conceiving the Bayelsa State Sports Festival was to foster unity among the people and positively channel the energy of the youth for productive ventures.
