The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched the African Super League which is set to start next year August.

CAF made the launching at the 44th General Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania on Wednesday.

In a statement made by CAF on Wednesday, Motesepe announced the approval of the competition, while also confirming the prize pool and start date.

The format of the tournament yet or how the teams for the Super League will be selected is yet to be revealed by the CAF.

CAF president, Patrice Motsepe while delivering his speech said,

“The African Super League is one of the most exciting developments in the history of African football and the objective in terms of what we are trying to achieve is very clear, number one is to make sure African club football is world-class and competes with the best in the world.

“It’s about finance as well, salaries, my family owns an African football club and what many players emphasize is that football is a short career and during that career, you need to maximise what you make and my advice is always to invest and to look after yourself and your families.

“African clubs have never had a good foundation, financially to keep some of the best players in Africa, to stay in Africa, from an income perspective, they love the continent, they want to be in Africa, so the financial part of club football is a critical issue and what we’re hoping to do is improve the quality of football. We need to get the spectators excited to watch local football so it’s as good as watching football anywhere in the world.

“We want the member associations to grow youth football, women’s football, higher the best people and also pay them competitive salaries. One of the biggest problems of the top clubs in the current CAF Champions League is they pay a lot of money on transport, accommodation and when they win, the money they get does not justify or compensate for the huge expenses they’ve undertaken," he concluded.

African Super League which will bring together the biggest clubs on the continent for an annual competition was under develeopment months ago.

And after a meeting held with 40 clubs during the latest Africa Cup of Nations, CAF president Patrice Motsepe announced that the first edition of the African Super League will take place in 2023.

The idea behind the tournament is to increase competition within the continent and create more income for the participating clubs. Additionally, if a team wishes to play in the newly-formed tournament, they will need an academy and a women’s team.

CAF announced on 3 July 2022 that the total prize money of the CAF Africa Super League will be USD 100 million, with the winner receiving USD 11.5 million.
