‎Organisers of Prosperity Cup Inspect Match Venues

Kick-off fixed for February 26th ‎ ‎As preparations for the 2026 edition of the Governor's Football Tournament, also known as the Prosperity Cup, enter top gear, the Central Organizing Committee (COC) of the competition has sent out its technical team to assess the suitability of match venues. ‎ ‎The technical team will be inspecting the proposed match centres to ascertain the condition of the playing turf and how easily accessible the communities are. Bayelsa Athletics Chairman Assures Athletes of Continuous Support

The Chairman, Bayelsa State Athletics Association, Dr. Kolawole Oredipe has charged the track and field athletes in the state on improved performance ahead of the new season, assuring that they will continue to get the needed support to excel. In his maiden address to the athletes during their training session on Friday at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom, Dr. Oredipe, noted that though the challenges were enormous, his appointment should signal a new beginning and a rebirth of athletics in the state. According to him, the synergy between the coaches, the secretary and  athletes will be strengthened to have more presence at the national level. FC Barcelona Confirm Participation in Prosperity Cup 2026

Ahead of the 2026 edition of the Bayelsa Governor's Football Tournament, officials of Spanish football giants, FC Barcelona have confirmed their willingness to participate in the tournament, also known as the Prosperity Cup. The confirmation is contained in a letter addressed to the Director General of the tournament, Mr Ono Akpe and signed by the Technical Director of Barca Academy, Mr Bernat Villa Gorriz, who doubles as the Project Director of Project Africa. Oredipe emerges new Bayelsa Athletics Association Chairman

Dr. Samuel Kolawole Oredipe, has become the new chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association. He takes over from Mr. Godwin Oghogho, whose tenure has since elapsed. The new chairman, Dr. Oredipe, a former middle distances runner, is the immediate past Vice-Chairman of the athletics association in the State and current board member of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), serving as the Auditor. In a letter of appointment endorsed by the Director of Sports, Bayelsa State Sports Council, Mr. Andrew Aye, the elevation of Dr. Oredipe, to the position of chairman followed his contributions towards the development of athletics in the state in the past five years. By Francis Joseph The Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, popularly known as the Prosperity Cup, has unveiled a series of landmark initiatives ahead of its 2026 edition, further reinforcing its status as Nigeria’s biggest and most impactful grassroots football competition. At a World Press Conference held by the organizers, the Director General of the tournament, Mr Ono Akpe announced that the eventual champions of the tournament will walk away with a ₦30 million cash prize — the highest winner’s prize in the history of the competition. Beyond the prize money, the organizers also rolled out key capacity-building programmes as part of their commitment to raising standards. One of such initiatives is a one-week refresher training clinic for fourth referees, to be organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Referees Council. ...2026 edition to mark 30th anniversary of Bayelsa State The closing date for registration of clubs for the 2026 edition of the Bayelsa Governor's Football Tournament, Nigeria's biggest grassroots football spectacle, has been extended by three weeks. The extension is as a result of requests by officials of club sides interested in participating in the competition, as well as the burial arrangements of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, which would have some members of the Central Organizing Committee playing critical roles.  With this development, the collection and submission of registration forms by interested club sides, will now close on Friday, February 6, 2026. The original closing date was January 15, 2026. It will be recalled that the sale of registration forms for the tournament, also called the Prosperity Cup, commenced on Monday, December 1, 2025.
